Pittsburgh’s 2026 Thanksgiving Game Plan: Turkey Trot, Black Friday Steelers, and a Dinner Yinz Don’t Have to Cook

Best Cranberry Sauce Pittsburgh

Let’s be honest about Thanksgiving week in Pittsburgh this year. It is stacked. There’s a Turkey Trot on Thursday morning, a Steelers game on Friday afternoon, Light Up Night and the holiday market waiting Downtown, and somewhere in there a houseful of people expecting a turkey that looks like the one in the commercials. Something has to give, and we’d gently suggest it shouldn’t be your sanity, your Thursday morning, or your seat on the couch at kickoff.

So here’s our pitch: let Pittsburgh handle the fun, and let Cooked Goose handle the bird. We’ve been cooking Thanksgiving dinner for this city for more than 45 years, and every year the same thing happens: the people who order early spend the holiday enjoying it, and the people who wait until the week of are calling to ask if we have anything left. (We usually don’t. More on that below.)

Here’s what’s going on around town, how a Thanksgiving dinner to go fits into all of it, and exactly when you need to order so you’re not the one carving a raw turkey at 6 a.m.

What’s Happening in Pittsburgh on Thanksgiving Week 2026

Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26 this year, and the city has built a full four-day weekend around it. Circle these on the fridge calendar:

The Weekend Before: Light Up Night and the Holiday Market

Light Up Night is Pittsburgh’s official permission slip to start the holidays. Downtown lights up, the fireworks go off over the rivers, and the Peoples Gas Holiday Market chalets open for the season in the Cultural District. It traditionally lands the weekend before Thanksgiving, which means the weekend before the big meal is already spoken for. Not exactly the ideal time to be brining a turkey in a cooler in the garage.

Thursday, Nov. 26: The 36th Annual YMCA Turkey Trot

More than 8,500 Pittsburghers are expected to lace up on Thanksgiving morning for the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh Turkey Trot, presented by UPMC Health Plan. There’s a 5-mile, a 5K, a family mile, and the Double Gobble if you’re the type who orders two slices of pie. Proceeds help the YMCA food pantries and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, and for the first time, finishers get a medal along with the long-sleeve shirt. You know what pairs beautifully with a Turkey Trot medal? A Thanksgiving dinner that’s already cooked and waiting in the fridge when you get home.

Friday, Nov. 27: Steelers vs. Broncos on Black Friday

This is the big one. The Steelers host the Denver Broncos at Acrisure Stadium at 3:00 p.m. on Black Friday, streaming on Prime Video, and it’s the franchise’s first Friday game since 1946. That means the traditional Friday-after-Thanksgiving leftover sandwich has been officially upgraded to a Friday-after-Thanksgiving tailgate. Which raises an important question: are you going to have enough turkey left to make that happen? A whole Butterball turkey for 10 says yes. A store-bought turkey breast says no.

Saturday, Nov. 28: Pitt closes the season at Cal

The Panthers wrap up the regular season on the West Coast against California, which means a late kickoff, a couch, and one last round of leftovers. Sweet potato casserole reheats better than you think.

The Math on Cooking Thanksgiving Yourself

We love a home cook. Some of our best customers are fantastic home cooks who’ve simply done the math. A 14-pound turkey needs three to four days to thaw in the fridge, so it goes in on Sunday, right around the time you’re getting home from Light Up Night. Then it’s roughly four hours in the oven on Thursday, plus the stuffing, the gravy, the mashed potatoes, the rolls, and the side you promised your aunt. The oven is booked solid from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and so are you.

Or: you pick up a box on Wednesday, put it in the fridge, and on Thursday you preheat the oven and follow the instructions on the lid. Everything reheats in the oven-safe pans it comes in. You run the Turkey Trot, you come home, dinner is on the table, and nobody has to wash a roasting pan. That’s the whole idea behind our heat & serve Thanksgiving dinner.

Thanksgiving Dinner To Go from Cooked Goose: What’s in the Box

Everything on the Cooked Goose Thanksgiving catering menu is made from scratch in our Oakdale and Leechburg kitchens, the same way we’ve done it for 45+ years. Homemade stuffing. Homemade gravy. A real, whole Butterball turkey, not a pressed turkey roast. Here’s how it breaks down.

Heat & Serve Thanksgiving Dinner — $319.95, serves 10

This is the one that sells out. A whole, fully cooked Butterball turkey, homemade stuffing, two quarts of homemade gravy, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, two dozen rolls, and your choice of green beans almondine, buttered corn niblets, or sweet potato casserole. Pick it up cold on Wednesday, reheat on Thursday, take all the credit. See the full heat & serve dinner.

Holiday Feast — $21.95 per person, 15 or more

Feeding the office, the church hall, the whole block, or a Friendsgiving that got out of hand? The Holiday Feast is roasted sliced turkey with gravy, homemade stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, rolls, and your choice of side, priced per person so it scales with your guest list. No 20-person minimum here — 15 is the number. See group and office Thanksgiving catering.

The add-ons everyone fights over

  • 12″ Pumpkin Pie ($14.95) or 10″ Apple Pie ($12.95) — because one dessert for ten people is a bold and frankly dangerous choice.

  • Pumpkin Log ($9.95) — the sleeper hit of the menu. Ask anyone who’s had it.

  • Roast Beef, serves 10 ($79.95) — for the family member who “doesn’t really do turkey.”

  • Sliced Turkey with Gravy, serves 10 ($59.95) — the Black Friday tailgate insurance policy.

  • Extra quart of gravy ($9.95) — there is no such thing as too much gravy. We will die on this hill.

Every item, every price, and every pickup detail lives on the Thanksgiving catering page, or you can go straight to order online.

Two Kitchens, One Deadline: How to Order

This is the part to actually read. Holiday orders sell out every single year, and we cut off orders on Friday, November 20 so the kitchen can cook everything fresh. Here’s the timeline:

  • Order by Friday, Nov. 20online in about two minutes or by phone at either kitchen.

  • Pick up cold on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. — at Oakdale (7851 Steubenville Pike, 412-258-5944) or Leechburg (29 Angel Drive, 724-845-6247). Choose whichever is closer; Oakdale is minutes from Robinson and the Parkway West, Leechburg covers the Alle-Kiski Valley and Route 66.

  • Reheat on Thursday, Nov. 26 — following the instructions in the box. Then go enjoy the Turkey Trot, the parade on TV, or the nap. Your call.

One honest note: we don’t deliver or offer full-service catering on Thanksgiving Day itself. All holiday meals are picked up cold with reheat instructions, no substitutions, and prices are subject to change. It’s how we keep the turkey at $319.95 for ten people instead of $500.

Friendsgiving, Office Thanksgiving, and the “We Should Do Something” Crowd

Thanksgiving week isn’t just Thursday anymore. Half of Pittsburgh is hosting a Friendsgiving the Saturday before, the other half is planning the office potluck nobody volunteered for, and every church, fire hall, and school in Allegheny, Washington, Butler, Westmoreland and Armstrong counties is doing a community dinner. The Holiday Feast was built for exactly this: sliced turkey and homemade fixings, priced per person, picked up ready to serve. Here’s how group Thanksgiving catering works, including how to order for 15, 50, or 100.

And if your Friendsgiving is a true potluck, we’re happy to be the person who “brings the turkey.” Nobody has to know.
